Learning to Crochet Short Rows

Learning to Crochet Short Rows

Lately I’ve been experimenting with short row crocheting. This was one of those patterns that always alluded me because I never knew the name of it. I’ve always felt like this pattern was so elegant. Just something about the curve of the short rows made a piece look elevated to me.

Now that I do, of course I dove in head first grabbing my yarn and hook and seeing if I could replicate the pattern from a picture. I tried my hand at it a few times. I’m definitely a girl who doesn’t use patterns if I can help it so it was trial and error. A hat that started off measuring 11 inches ended up at 9. I hadn’t known this pattern would shrink so much.

This made me so irritable because hunh? Why are you doing this? I say 9 inches and you stay 9 inches!

It was intended for my husband, but needless to say, it ended up being our 6-month old’s.

Even with a different yarn/brand, the work still ended up shrinking 3 inches. I reworked this pattern to start off at 14.25 inches which ended up shrinking to 11 inches. I think it was because I used only slip stitches. It seems that stitch eats the length of my garments whereas double crochet’s seemed to add some length.

Yarn used is Lion Brand’s Heartland in the color Grand Canyon

It doesn’t look like much to me as a WIP but it’s damn cute when you’re done.

Either way, this hat turned out to be so charming! I’m in the middle of my second one, this one will fit my husband. Upon completion of this one, I’ll write a pattern and make a video. I’m probably a little late to the video pattern party for this one but hey.
